Russia-Ukraine crisis: Russia has not suffered so many casualties during the fighting in any of its armed conflicts since its inception, Ukraine said.

Russian troops attacked an army base in the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv but the assault was repelled, the Ukrainian military said in a Facebook posting early on Saturday. Separately, the Interfax Ukraine agency said Russian soldiers were trying to capture one of the city's electricity generating stations. Russia has further claimed it has captured the southeastern Ukrainian city of Melitopol.Meanwhile, Russia has vetoed a UN Security Council resolution demanding that Moscow immediately stop its attack on Ukraine and withdraw all troops, a defeat the United States and its supporters knew was inevitable but said would highlight Russia's global isolation.India abstained on a US-sponsored UN Security Council resolution that "deplores in the strongest terms" Russia's "aggression" against Ukraine, with New Delhi saying dialogue is the only answer to settling differences and disputes and voicing "regret" that the path of diplomacy was given up.An Air India plane departed from the Mumbai airport on Saturday morning for Romanian capital Bucharest to evacuate Indians stranded in Ukraine due to the Russian military offensive.

Ukraine's Defence Ministry said on Friday that more than 1,000 Russian servicemen had been killed so far in the Ukrainian conflict.

"Russia has not suffered so many casualties during the fighting in any of its armed conflicts since its inception," the ministry said.

Russia Ukraine Crisis Live: As invading Russian forces stormed toward Ukraine’s capital Saturday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy sought to dispel rumours that he had called upon the army to lay down arms. “This is our land, our country, our children. And we will defend all of that,” he said in a short video. Zelenskyy’s message follows reports of overnight shelling and fighting in Kyiv in which 35 people including two children were injured, reported The Guardian, quoting the city’s mayor.

Meanwhile, Russia vetoed a UN Security Council resolution demanding that Moscow immediately stop its attack on Ukraine and withdraw all troops, a defeat the United States and its supporters knew was inevitable but said would highlight Russia’s global isolation. The vote on Friday was 11 in favour, with Russia voting no and China, India and the United Arab Emirates abstaining. In other news, an Air India evacuation flight comprising Indians in Ukraine has taken off from Romania and will arrive in Mumbai at 4 pm. Air India will operate more flights on Saturday to Bucharest and Hungarian capital Budapest to evacuate Indians stranded in Ukraine.
